Genting Highlands Day Trip from Kuala Lumpur: Buses, Cable Car & Timings

Search for a Genting Highlands day trip from Kuala Lumpur and you will mostly be sold a tour: hotel pickup, a coach, a fixed itinerary. You do not need one. The trip is a bus from KL Sentral and a ten-minute cable car, and doing it yourself costs less than most people's airport transfer.

What you are going up for: a resort city at 1,800 metres, where the air is genuinely cool, the cloud comes and goes through the buildings, and there is an indoor mall, a theme park, a casino and a hilltop temple stacked on one ridge. What follows is the practical part — fares, ticket validity, and the timings that decide whether the day works.

Planning your Genting Highlands day trip from Kuala Lumpur

Two decisions shape the whole day. First, whether you are going up for the theme park or just for the ride and the air — because Genting SkyWorlds closes every Tuesday, except on Malaysian national public holidays and school holidays, and its tickets are dated and timed and have to be booked online before you travel. Turning up on a Tuesday with no plan is the single most common way to waste the trip.

Second, when you leave. Allow around 1.5 to 2 hours each way from KL Sentral, and remember you are climbing into cloud forest: the view from the gondola is a lottery, and the odds are better in the morning than at 4pm.

The bus from KL: fares and where it leaves from

The express bus is the easy answer, and it is cheap. From KL Sentral — the counter is on the lower ground floor — an adult ticket is RM10 one way, or RM7 for a child, senior citizen or disabled passenger. Buy the bus-and-cable-car combination for RM20 (RM17 concession) and you skip a second queue at the top of the hill.

Other departure points, if KL Sentral is not your closest:

• Terminal Bersepadu Gombak (TBG) — RM12 adult. This replaced the old ticket counter at Gombak LRT station in July 2025, so ignore older guides pointing you to the LRT.
• Pekeliling, Pudu Sentral and TBS also run services.
• KLIA and KLIA2 — RM35 adult, RM25 concession, if you are going straight from the airport.

The first bus out of KL Sentral is at 7:30am and the last outbound service is at 10:30pm. Return buses run through the day, but the timetable is not a mirror image of the outbound one — check the last departure on the board when you arrive rather than assuming you have until 10:30pm to get down.

Every bus arrives at the same place: the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets terminal, at the foot of the hill. If that name is unfamiliar, it is the terminal older articles call Awana — the outlet mall, the bus terminal and the cable car base station all sit together.

The Awana SkyWay cable car: which ticket, and how long it lasts

From the terminal, the Awana SkyWay gondola runs 7am to 11pm and takes about 10 minutes to the top station. Fares:

Two things worth knowing. The glass-floor cabin has to be bought online at least a day in advance — you cannot decide you want one while standing in the queue. And express boarding is worth the RM6 on a weekend or public holiday, when the standard line is the longest wait of the day.

On validity, the question everyone asks: a ticket bought online is valid for 30 days from purchase, and once redeemed for a physical ticket it is valid for 72 hours from the date of your visit. So booking ahead for a specific weekend is safe, and a fogged-out afternoon does not automatically write off the ticket.

One more thing that is free: the SkyWay stops at Chin Swee, the temple station on the hillside, at no extra cost. Hop off, walk around the pagoda and the terraces, and catch the next gondola up. It is the best-value twenty minutes of the day.

If the cable car is not running

It happens — maintenance, or weather. Resorts World's own position is that when the SkyWay is closed, the transfer runs from Sky Sentral instead, so you still get up the hill; you just do it on the road rather than in the air. If the gondola is the reason you are going, it is worth checking before you commit to the trip, because the drive up is a winding hour and the reward at the top is a mall in the cloud.

A realistic timetable

The version that works, with no rushing:

1. 7:30am — first bus from KL Sentral, combined ticket in hand.
2. Around 9:30am — arrive at the Premium Outlets terminal; straight onto the gondola.
3. 9:45am — stop at Chin Swee, then continue up.
4. 10:00am onwards — theme park (if it is not a Tuesday), or the malls, the viewpoints and lunch.
5. Mid-afternoon — start down. The gondola queue and the bus queue both build late in the day, and the road down is slow when everyone leaves at once.

Do the maths on a tour

Bus both ways at RM10, plus a return gondola at RM19, is under RM40 of transport for the day at current fares. The guided day tours that fill the search results bundle in hotel pickup and the tickets — convenient, but that is what you are paying for. If you are happy with a bus and a ten-minute cable car, keep the difference.

Getting back to your KLCC apartment

Buses come down to KL Sentral, which is one Kelana Jaya LRT stop from the middle of town — so where you are staying decides how long the tail end of the day feels.
